Our Story

Built by guides, run by guides — and proud of every trip we send down the river.

The Beginning

From One Raft, A River Career

Rapid Expeditions started the way most good river stories do — with one raft, a beat-up pickup truck, and a guide who refused to leave the water. In 2003, Dave Crawford launched his first commercial trips on the Pigeon River with little more than a few paddles, a stack of loaner helmets, and a stubborn belief that a great day outside shouldn't cost a fortune.

What began as a weekend side gig on the banks of the Pigeon quickly outgrew the truck. By the second summer, Dave was running trips seven days a week. By the third, he'd hired his first guide — his brother-in-law, who still runs the Lower Pigeon every Saturday. Today, Rapid Expeditions is a full multi-adventure outfitter with rafting, kayaking, and mountain biking trips, but the formula hasn't changed: real guides, real boats, and a real love for the river.

We're still family-owned and still family-run. Dave is on the dock most mornings. His wife Mary keeps the office humming. Their kids have grown up wearing PFDs that come down to their knees. When you paddle with us, you're not a number in a booking system — you're a guest, and we plan to see you back next summer.

What We Stand For

Our Values

Three simple rules we keep on the river and off. They're printed on the inside of every guide shirt.

Safety First

Every guide is Swiftwater Rescue certified, every guest gets a thorough safety talk, and every trip is run within the team's comfort level. We turn boats around when the water says no. No trip is worth a person.

Leave No Trace

The Pigeon has given us everything. We give back by packing out every cooler, supporting river clean-ups four times a year, and teaching guests how to read a river without wearing it down. Wild rivers stay wild because people like you paddle gently.

Make 'Em Smile

If you didn't laugh at least once, we didn't do our job. Our guides sing, splash, tell bad river jokes, and remember your kid's name from last summer. Adventure sticks when it's fun — and you'll be back because of how it felt.

Owner & Founder

Dave Crawford

Started running the Pigeon in 2003 with a single raft and a head full of plans. Twenty years later, he still sets up the dock every morning and personally runs the first Upper Pigeon trip of each release day. ACA-certified, Swiftwater Rescue, and the guy who remembers every regular by name.

Head Guide

Sarah Mitchell

Sarah joined the crew in 2014 as a college summer hire and never really left. She runs our busiest weekend Lower Pigeon trips, trains every new guide, and has a knack for calming first-timers in big water. A former collegiate paddler, she's the voice you'll hear on every safety talk.

Mike, lead kayak instructor at Rapid Expeditions
Lead Kayak Instructor

Mike Hensley

Mike is the reason our kayak school is consistently full. He teaches everything from the first roll to playboating on a green wave, with the patience of a grandfather and the skill of someone who surfs the Smokies every fall. He designed our full progression from beginner to Class III.

Our Home Water

The Pigeon River

The Pigeon River cuts east of the Great Smoky Mountains through a gorge of hardwood forest, old logging roads, and granite outcrops. For our guests, it's six and a half miles of navigable whitewater — but for us, it's the office, the gym, and the front porch all at once.

The Pigeon is a dam-controlled river, which means our water comes from the TVA. Releases run Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday through spring and summer — that's when the river wakes up and the rapids show their teeth. The Lower Pigeon is our family-friendly Class I-II run, perfect for first-timers and groups with kids. The Upper Pigeon steps up to Class III-IV with named rapids like Powerhouse, Double Reaction, and Lost Guide. We run both every release day, and most guests end up doing one of each.

Long before it was a rafting river, the Pigeon was a logging river. Old flume channels, rusting iron pins, and the bones of splash dams still hide in the banks. We work closely with the Forest Service and local conservation groups to keep those pieces of Appalachian history intact, and to keep the river as clean and wild as the day we found it.

Our Community

A small outfitter only stays small if it stays in one place. We live here, raise our kids here, and try to pour as much back into these hills as the river pours into us.

Bean Trees Cafe

Our official pre-trip coffee stop. We send every morning trip over to Bean Trees for biscuits and locally-roasted beans before we put on the river. They're family, and they make the best breakfast sandwich in Cocke County.

Local Schools

Every spring we host free river-safety days for the science classes at Cocke County High and the middle schools in Newport. We also hire high schoolers as dock crew every summer — many of them end up on the guide team by college.

River Conservation

We're active members of the Pigeon River Cleanup Coalition and partner with American Rivers on annual water-quality monitoring. A portion of every season's revenue goes straight back into keeping this watershed clean.
